Many Paths To God - What Utter Bullshit

How many times have you, (assuming a Christian as the reader) been met with a person who states that there are many paths to God and that Christianity is just one route of many equally valid ways to approach God? How many of you have been faced by someone who calls themselves a Christian but shares the same view? Not too many I would hope, God willing!

Well, I just had such an experience from a churchgoer who doesn't read the bible at all often, and had somehow formed this baseless opinion. Without trying to bash them with scripture I decided to lay it out simply. The same method may well prove useful against those who have no particular religion and are looking for an (a simple) answer as to why Chrstians state there is only one God and only the one gospel (the only salvation as found in Jesus Christ.)

I simply stated to the churchgoer that the Christian faith, the "one true gospel" came at such a heavy price - namely the innocent life of Christ (God incarnate) upon the cross; that if there were other equally valid "faiths" then Christ need not have died at all, and it cheapens the gospel to even consider it - to the end that Christ had then no requirement or need to die, since replacement faith "X" would have fully sufficed in its place. This makes the Father into a wicked God, rather than a merciful one who would scorn shame and suffer to exemplify the strength He gave to us in our faith.

Mat 26:38 Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.
Mat 26:39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.
Mat 26:40 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?
Mat 26:41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
Mat 26:42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. (KJV)

Now, Christ prayed that if there were any other option than for Him to drink the full cup of His sufferings whole, leaving no room for another, then He (Christ) would have willed it were it not for the fact that the Father has no other gospel to give and Christ's life is required of Him to show His blamelessness. I.e. the cup would not pass to another because there is never to be another. Christ must drink it - It is the Father's will. If there were another gospel or christ to follow, Christ suffered meaninglessly and this paints a terrible picture of God as a cruel and vindictive ogre.

There is no "gospel mark 2.0" - no other way following another Christ, and no other salvation under heaven but in Christ, beginning then and so lasting forever.

The reply I got to my efforts was more than just expected, I was told "We are all different". Though I do not doubt we are, I can not state that the idea all faiths are valid, (which at the outset I stated was not a Christian one.) Such an idea does not validate other faiths because there are simply people who do not accept, and also even outright reject Christ. To be fair, though the chuchgoer does not read the bible enough, their church pastor deserves the greater ear-bashing, and should be tarred and feathered and run out of the kingdom of God.

So - the utter bullshit? I don't doubt that people are trying to serve their idea of the "correct" God. However it is not hard for me to accept that many are called and few chosen for the gospel. That bullshit - that there are "as many paths to God as there are people in the world" is false. Even "Mother Teresa" (sorry about the misspelling) advocated similar ideas and showed her doubts - but she, (alas) like so many other's examples have done; do more damage to the faith by painting the gospel cheapened to ineffectiveness than their truly good works have benefited it for believers' and more especially non-believers' sakes alike.

Mat 14:1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,
Mat 14:2 And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.
Mat 14:3 For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife.
Mat 14:4 For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.
Mat 14:5 And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.
Mat 14:6 But when Herod’s birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.
Mat 14:7 Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.
Mat 14:8 And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist’s head in a charger.
Mat 14:9 And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath’s sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her. (KJV)

Even in Christ's day, being annointed for the sake of the gospel's preeminence was better than merely being as one person putting bread in other peoples mouths - salvation has and always will take precedence, and if the one true gospel has lost it's worth, what is the point of working for it?
